About

Hi! I’m Swarnadeep, a 2nd year PhD Student at IRIT Institut de Recherche en Informatique de Toulouse. I am also associated with ANITI.

I am working with Nicholas Asher and I mainly focus on the limits of language models, especially the big ones. I test how well they handle logical reasoning. I also work on collaborative conversations where users and designers team up to reach a goal. My works aims to make language models more reliable so that they can be reliably deployed in critical scenarios.

My work and research

I’m a computer scientist specializing in natural language processing, with just enough knowledge in linguistics and statistics to stir things up. My research focuses on large language models, particularly their logical reasoning capabilities. I believe that enhancing the logical coherence of these models will make them more reliable and aligned with human understanding. My work combines formal linguistics with language models, exploring how formal methods can improve their explainability and interpretability.

I am particularly interested in applying my work on language models to develop language assistants that collaborate with humans to achieve specific goals. My aim is to make these models highly responsive to natural, free-flowing dialogue and ensure they act as reliable assistants. They should avoid “hallucinating” responses and maintain a grounded understanding of their context and surroundings.

Most of my published work has focused on the limitations of language models and their behavior with texts containing logical operators like NOT and EVERY. I have also demonstrated that language models can be highly inconsistent with predicate-argument structures and have a tendency to hallucinate, raising significant questions about the authenticity of their responses.

My background and history

I received my Msc. in Computer Science from the Chennai Mathematical Institute and my BSc. in Computer Science at the Ramakrishna Mission Vidyamandira,Belur Math. I have done my schooling from Don Bosco Bandel.

Miscellaneous

I’m a huge fan of comics and superhero movies. I devour both fiction and non-fiction books, with a special interest in colonial history and the WWII era. Besides that, I’m a die-hard Madridista (for those who don’t know, that means I’m a big Real Madrid supporter).
